We had unique weather for this winter beach session. Sunshine mixed with cloud cover that would occasionally give way to a soft gentle rain. The little steaks on the top image were those misty little raindrop with sunbeams shining through! Sweaters kept us warm until the sun went down, rain and all.
The first half of the year I get more commissions to photograph babies and children on their own, the focus usually being on the child or children. The last half of the year seems to be more family oriented. People start thinking of holiday cards and realizing another year is passing and they need to photograph their growing families now to help savor the memories later.
In the fall I was lucky this gorgeous family braved over 100 degree temperatures and unexpected beach crowds (!) so we could do their session at one of my favorite (and family friendly) Malibu beaches.
I love photographing families, and kids in general, outdoors. We're so lucky here in Southern California that our weather cooperates most of the year. (Sorry to my Midwestern and Eastern friends! You're welcome to come visit if you can dig the car out of the snow covered drive!) Most kids are just so much happier outside than in a stuffy studio, especially somewhere they can play while humoring their personal paparazzi for the day.
Little miss personality is the "baby" of her family with three older brothers so you can imagine she's surrounded by plenty of cars and trucks and stuff to play with. So, we just had to make a little time to indulge in some girlie girl fun, no boys allowed! I was a girl who loved growing up with a brother who shared his toys and can love me some Tonka truck and Matchbox cars play time. But there's just something about a twirlie skirt and pretty accessories that are irresistable!
OK, I'm not a big fan of formal New Year's resolutions but I'm always in favor of setting positive goals. The start of a new year, especially the beginning of a new decade is a nice place to begin. Vowing to never let a single day go by without indulging in chocolate is probably too easy, huh? A goal that I hope is almost as easy is to start updating this blog each week. Or month. Hey, baby steps, baby steps!
So, here is my first blog post of the decade. And now I'm off to take care of that chocolate goal ; ). Hope your new year and fresh new decade is off to as sweet a start!
Oh have I neglected this poor blog! The holidays are hectic for everyone, for photographers it's truly our busy season. In my case that means blogging has to take a backseat to getting sessions proofed and orders filled! Time to take a little brightness break, especially with our forecasted rain. Love this kid, every time I see her she's just so full of sunshine!
Sometimes you just need to share a fresh bit of happiness! Flowers always work their happy magic for me!

I've always loved fairytales - I read every single collection I could find in the library. I was one of those head in the clouds little girls. (Shhh, sometimes I still am!) Today I love that my work as a child photographer allows frequent little visits to the world of "Let's pretend." I have fun creating a little make believe world and the kids seem to enjoy playing along, they surprise me with the creative story lines they share while we make adorable portraits. I had a great playdate, giggles and all, with this little princess!
